Distinguishing features: large, elongate beetle, superficially like a longhorn beetle. The wingcases have faint longitudinal ridges and dark tips.

Adults eat: very little

Larvae eat: waterlogged wood.

Damage is: tunnels, large exit holes

Other info: Wharf borers are found in waterlogged wood, in canals and non-saline parts of rivers. The adults fly some distance from the source. They are frequently confused with Soldier beetles, Rhagonycha, which are reddish brown and commonly found mating on cow parsley.
