Shape: long beetle shape
Colour: red with metallic wing cases, which vary in colour
Antennae: long
Distinguishing features: typical longhorn beetle shape.
Larvae eat: the nutritious layer of wood between the bark and the cambium layer
Damage is: large oval tunnels in the wood just under the surface of the bark. These are packed with cylindrical frass. Exit holes are large (3-4mm) and oval in shape.
Adults eat: very little.

There are hundreds of species of longhorns which attack growing and recently felled timber. This is one of the most common in houses in the UK as it is often found emerging from logs brought into homes.
