Dark carpet beetle Anthrenus fuscus

Adult beetle.

Size: 2-4mm

Shape: rounded

Colour: variegated white, black and gold scales.

Antennae: small, tight club.

Distinguishing features: scales are triangular. Adult is smaller and much darker than the Varied Carpet Beetle and Guernsey Carpet beetle. Antennal club is one long segment.

Adults eat pollen and nectar

Larvae eat dead insects but may also eat wool, fur and feathers.

Damage is small neat holes often with cast larval skins and gritty frass.

Often found in historic houses.
