Shape: Oval, typical fly shape
Colour: Black with silvery gold hairs.
Antennae: Very short
Distinguishing features: One pair of transparent wings, thorax has silvery gold hairs. Large red eyes.
Adults eat: Very little
Larvae are not pests. They are parasitic on earth worms.
Damage: Adults can cause spotting on curtains etc.
Often found on: Windowsills in attics.
The adult flies hatch out in the autumn and come into attics to hibernate in large numbers. The same area is used by the flies year on year. The dead bodies can act as a food source for insect pests.
