High temperature treatment
Insect pests will be killed at temperatures above 50oC. Ovens and hot boxes can be used, but these methods may result in the relative humidity dropping during treatment. This may result in the failure of glue joints and organic materials may warp and split. Consequently, these methods should only be used for robust objects.
By carrying out high temperature treatments in a humidity controlled environment these problems are avoided. More sensitive objects can thus be treated. Some museums are now installing chambers to carry out this type of treatment; Thermo Lignum TM provide this treatment in London or via a mobile chamber. Objects do not need to be bagged to be treated in these types of chambers.
